Director of Maintenance – September 2024

Safety and compliance are crucial in aviation, particularly under Part 135 regulations, where the Director of Maintenance (DOM) plays a pivotal role. Responsible for ensuring that aircraft are airworthy before being released back to service, the DOM’s expertise is vital for maintaining high operational standards. The process begins when the flight crew reports any issues to the DOM, prompting an initial assessment of the situation. The DOM then meticulously investigates the problem using maintenance manuals to determine the course of action. If necessary, the DOM locates a qualified Part 145 Repair Station nearby and communicates the specific repairs needed to the maintenance provider.

The DOM then personally oversees the repair process to ensure quality assurance. Following the completion of repairs, the DOM conducts a thorough inspection to confirm that everything has been addressed satisfactorily. Accurate documentation of repairs and maintenance is not just essential but a critical part of our role. This paperwork must be completed and signed off properly. Once the repairs are satisfactory, the DOM briefs the flight crew on the work done and any operational considerations they should know. Finally, when everything checks out, the aircraft is officially released and prepared for its next flight.

The Director of Maintenance is critical in ensuring the safety and reliability of aircraft operating under Part 135 regulations. By adhering to structured processes, the DOM upholds compliance and guarantees proper maintenance, facilitating safe flight operations.
