Very Light Jets: Aircraft and Charter Considerations

Very light jets were developed for short-range missions with smaller passenger groups. Aircraft commonly associated with the category include the Eclipse 500, Citation Mustang, and Phenom 100, but individual airframes can have different interiors, equipment, and operating limitations.

What to compare

• Passenger seating and usable cabin space.
• Baggage size, weight, and loading restrictions.
• Lavatory configuration.
• Route distance, winds, weather, and potential fuel stops.
• Departure and arrival runway conditions.
• The proposed direct carrier and exact aircraft.

A smaller aircraft is not automatically the least expensive or most suitable option. Positioning, operator availability, airport fees, schedule, and the mission profile all affect a charter proposal. Published manufacturer figures also require a trip-specific performance review by the direct carrier.

Build the mission brief before choosing the category

Begin with the complete passenger and baggage requirements. List the bags and their approximate dimensions, then add any large equipment. State whether passengers need a particular cabin arrangement or boarding assistance. A category label cannot confirm those requirements for a specific airframe.

Next, describe the route and schedule. Include both airports if known, the required arrival time and whether a fuel stop would be acceptable. Ask the direct carrier to assess the proposed aircraft for those conditions rather than treating a published range figure as a trip guarantee.

The useful output is a written comparison of the actual options. For each proposal, record:

• The exact aircraft and direct carrier.
• The confirmed seating, baggage and cabin requirements.
• The proposed airports, timing and any planned stop.
• The total price, inclusions and applicable change terms.

Compare an alternative when a requirement is tight

If baggage space, cabin needs or the proposed flight plan is uncertain, ask for an alternative aircraft category in the same request. Compare what each option solves for your trip. A larger aircraft may offer a different cabin or loading arrangement, but that must be confirmed on the proposed aircraft and assessed alongside the itinerary and written price.
