The Gulfstream G650 remains a compelling ultra-long-range charter aircraft, but in 2026 it should be chosen as an in-service fleet option—not described as a new flagship. Gulfstream’s G650/G650ER production ended after more than 13 years, with the G800 named as successor; charter buyers should distinguish the G650 from the G650ER and compare both with the newer G700 and G800 on the actual mission. AIN, February 12, 2025

The original version of this article looked at the public fascination with companies and prominent people associated with the G650. That historical ownership angle explains part of the model’s cultural visibility, but it does not answer today’s buyer question: which Gulfstream fits the route, cabin use, and airport plan? Start with the Gulfstream G650 aircraft page, then request an option built around the trip.

2026 status: G650 and G650ER are charter aircraft, not current new-build models

As checked on August 11, 2026, Gulfstream’s current lineup lists the G800, G700, G600, G500, G400, and G300; the G650 and G650ER are no longer on that lineup. Gulfstream aircraft lineup Gulfstream still publishes specifications on the G650ER page, which is the correct official reference for the G650-family figures in this guide. Gulfstream G650ER

This does not diminish the aircraft’s mission relevance. It changes the buying language. Availability, configuration, maintenance status, operator, and positioning now matter more than selecting a new production slot. A charter adviser should present the offered airframe and operating plan rather than imply all G650-family aircraft are interchangeable.

G650 vs. G650ER: the essential difference

The G650 and G650ER share the same published cabin dimensions, capacity, windows, engines, and maximum operating speed. The G650ER has more published range and a longer published takeoff distance. Gulfstream G650ER

| Published specification | G650 | G650ER | | --- | --- | --- | | Maximum range | 7,000 nm / 12,964 km at Mach 0.85, NBAA IFR theoretical, 8 passengers and 4 crew. Gulfstream | 7,500 nm / 13,890 km on the same stated basis. Gulfstream | | High-speed cruise range | 6,000 nm. Aviation Week | 6,400 nm. Aviation Week | | Takeoff distance, SL/ISA/MTOW | 1,786 m / 5,858 ft. Gulfstream Aviation Week | 1,920 m / 6,299 ft. Gulfstream Aviation Week | | Maximum operating speed | Mach 0.925. Gulfstream | Mach 0.925. Gulfstream | | Cabin | 14.27 m long, 1.91 m high, 2.49 m wide; 5.52 m³ baggage. Gulfstream | Same published cabin and baggage dimensions. Gulfstream |

The range figures are theoretical values under stated assumptions. Passenger load, baggage, winds, routing, alternates, runway conditions, and operating margins decide the real mission. A G650ER’s extra published range can matter, but it never eliminates the need for trip-specific planning.

What the G650 cabin is right for

Gulfstream publishes a maximum capacity of up to 19 passengers, sleeping for up to 10, and up to four living areas. Gulfstream G650ER Those maxima should not be treated as a single cabin configuration. Gulfstream’s published layouts include a forward-galley/four-living-area arrangement for 16 passengers and 7 sleepers, and three other configurations for 13 or 15 passengers and 6 sleepers. Cabin planning questions that matter

| If your group needs… | Confirm on the offered aircraft | | --- | --- | | Productive work across a long day | Seating, tables, connectivity capability, and the placement of the work area. | | Proper rest on an overnight | The actual bed layout and how many passengers can sleep—not the separate published maxima. Gulfstream G650ER | | Privacy for principals and staff | The living-area layout, door configuration, crew rest, and service flow. | | Bulky or substantial luggage | The baggage plan, passenger count, and route-specific weight assumptions. |

The cabin includes 16 Gulfstream Panoramic Oval Windows and Gulfstream publishes a cabin altitude of 1,003 m at 12,497 m. Gulfstream G650ER These are credible long-haul comfort features. The actual interior, however, varies by airframe, so request photographs and a configuration before confirming a charter.

Mission fit: where the G650 family makes sense

The G650 entered service in December 2012 after FAA certification on September 7, 2012. The G650ER’s certification was announced on October 8, 2014, with first deliveries before the end of 2014. Aviation Week Both are published with a 51,000-ft maximum operating altitude, an initial cruise altitude of 41,000 ft, and steep-approach certification. Aviation Week

That profile makes the family a logical starting point for large-group transoceanic missions, long U.S. domestic sectors, and routes where a multi-zone cabin matters. It does not make the aircraft automatically suitable for every smaller-airport or hot-and-high mission. Published takeoff numbers are controlled sea-level, ISA, maximum-weight values; actual dispatch performance is airport and day specific. Gulfstream G650ER

How the G700 and G800 change the family conversation

The newer models are not simply G650ERs with a different name. They change the range, cabin, and performance reference points.

| Published family comparison | G650 / G650ER | G700 | G800 | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Maximum range | 7,000 / 7,500 nm. Gulfstream G650ER | 7,750 nm / 14,353 km. Gulfstream G700 | 8,200 nm / 15,186 km at Mach 0.85. Gulfstream G800 | | Mmo | Mach 0.925. Gulfstream G650ER | Mach 0.935. Gulfstream G700 | Mach 0.935. Gulfstream G800 | | Living areas | Up to 4. The G700 offers the family’s longest published cabin: 17.35 m excluding baggage and 19.41 m total interior, compared with 14.27 m for the G650 family and 16.33 m total interior for the G800. Gulfstream G700 Gulfstream G650ER Gulfstream G800 The G800 earned FAA and EASA type certification on April 16, 2025, and Gulfstream reported 8,200 nm at Mach 0.85, 7,000 nm at Mach 0.90, and a certified balanced field length of 5,812 ft / 1,771 m. General Dynamics, April 16, 2025 AIN reported the first G800 delivery in the week of August 27, 2025. AIN, August 27, 2025

A simple choice framework

  • Consider a G650 when its published 7,000 nm range, cabin, and shorter of the two G650-family takeoff figures fit the actual mission. Gulfstream G650ER
  • Consider a G650ER when its additional published range is relevant and the offered aircraft’s configuration and availability are the best match. Gulfstream G650ER
  • Consider a G700 when the route benefits from the longer cabin and up to five living areas. Gulfstream G700
  • Consider a G800 when the mission needs the family’s highest published range, while still validating the precise airframe’s availability and route performance. Gulfstream G800

The Global 7500 is a meaningful alternative for the same mission tier; its cited 7,700 nm theoretical range, four living spaces, accessible baggage, and En Suite shower make it a different, not lesser, proposition. Charter the right airframe, not a label

The important safeguards are concrete: confirm the operator, requested configuration, current maintenance and positioning plan, crew legality, taxes, and terms. The FAA recommends that charter buyers ask to see the operator’s Air Carrier/Operating Certificate and flags missing Federal Excise Tax on an invoice as a warning sign. FAA charter-buyer guidance Review safety, use aircraft comparisons, and ask whether a flexible return could create an empty-leg opportunity.
