The Learjet 55 is a legacy midsize jet that combines the Learjet brand's swept-wing performance identity with a larger cabin than the company's earlier light jets. It can still be considered for regional and medium-distance charter when the proposed aircraft's maintenance, cabin refurbishment, navigation approvals and operating history are strong, but its age and variant spread make a current tail-specific review essential.
Why the Learjet 55 remains a charter consideration
Learjet developed the Model 55 with a larger stand-up-style cabin mounted above a swept low wing and T-tail, and the type entered service in 1981. The 55B, 55C and extended-range derivatives added refinements before production ceased in 1990, and the later Learjet 60 used the 55-series cabin and aerodynamic lineage as a starting point rather than representing the same aircraft or performance standard.

The usable cabin is approximately 16 feet 8 inches long, 5 feet 11 inches wide and 5 feet 9 inches high; the FAA's high-altitude reference lists 502 cubic feet for the relevant pressurized-cabin/decompression volume, a basis that can differ from marketing passenger-cabin measurements, and approximately 67 cubic feet of combined baggage capacity is a model planning reference. Windows provide light beside the main seats, while Wi-Fi, power, entertainment, galley equipment and lavatory privacy reflect individual upgrades.

EUROCONTROL publishes indicative Learjet 55 performance of approximately 2,500 nautical miles and 400 KTAS, figures intended for type-level screening rather than operational planning and subject to variant, payload and reserve assumptions. Two Honeywell TFE731-3A-2B turbofans, a swept low wing with winglets and a T-tail define the core aircraft; legacy Collins and Honeywell flight-deck equipment and subsequent navigation or surveillance upgrades vary widely across the remaining fleet.
